What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside of the uterus. With many women, this can cause pain and discomfort, and sometimes issues with fertility. Endometriosis can appear in many different places in the body, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other areas in the pelvic region. The misplaced endometrial tissue can cause inflammation, scarring, and the formation of adhesions, which can lead to pain during menstruation, discomfort and pain during intercourse, painful bowel movements and other associated symptoms. While endometriosis is a chronic condition and can be difficult to manage, there are treatments available to help alleviate the symptoms and improve quality your of life.

What is Acupuncture and how can it help with Endometriosis?

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body. This ancient healing practice has been used for thousands of years to treat a variety of health conditions, including endometriosis. In recent years, acupuncture has gained popularity as a complementary therapy to conventional treatments for endometriosis, and many women have reported significant improvement in their symptoms with regular acupuncture sessions.

Here’s how acupuncture can help with endometriosis:

  • Reduces pain: One of the hallmark symptoms of endometriosis is pain, which can range from mild to debilitating. Acupuncture has been shown to stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, and reduce inflammation, which can help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with endometriosis.
  • Regulates hormones: Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent condition, meaning it thrives on the presence of estrogen in the body. Acupuncture has been shown to regulate hormone levels, including estrogen, progesterone, and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which can help reduce the growth and spread of endometrial tissue.
  • Improves circulation: Acupuncture can improve blood flow and circulation in the pelvic region, which can help nourish the reproductive organs and reduce inflammation.
  • Enhances fertility: Endometriosis is a leading cause of infertility in women, as it can affect the function of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus. Acupuncture can help improve fertility by regulating hormones, improving blood flow to the reproductive organs, and reducing stress and anxiety, which can interfere with conception.
  • Reduces stress and anxiety: Living with endometriosis can be stressful and anxiety-provoking, which can exacerbate symptoms and make it more difficult to cope. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety by promoting relaxation and the release of “feel-good” chemicals like serotonin and dopamine.

While acupuncture has been shown to be beneficial in the management of endometriosis, it’s important to note that it should not be used as a standalone treatment. Acupuncture can be used in conjunction with other conventional treatments, such as naturopathic care, pain medication, hormonal therapy, or surgery, as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

During an acupuncture session, a Sean will insert thin needles into specific points on the body, which correspond to different organs through the central nervous system. Sean will use a gentle twisting or tapping motion to stimulate the needles, which can produce a tingling or warming sensation. As well, it is common to use electro-acupuncture for endometriosis treatments, as this has been shown to improve outcomes. Most people find acupuncture to be relaxing and pain-free, and many fall asleep during the session.

It’s important to work with a licensed acupuncturist who has experience working with women with endometriosis. Your acupuncturist will work with you to develop a treatment plan that addresses your individual symptoms and concerns. Typically, women with endometriosis will need to receive acupuncture once or twice a week for several months to see significant improvement in their symptoms.

In addition to acupuncture, there are many other complementary therapies that may be beneficial for women with endometriosis. These include:

  • Naturopathic Medicine: An look at inflammatory markers, hormonal regulation and dietary considerations are just a few of the details your ND will investigate to improve your quality of life and reduce symptoms.
  • Massage therapy: Massage therapy can help improve circulation and reduce pain and inflammation in the pelvic region.
  • Mind-body therapies: Mind-body therapies like yoga, meditation, and guided imagery can help reduce stress and promote relaxation.
  • Nutritional counseling: Making dietary changes, such as reducing your intake of processed foods and increasing your intake of anti-inflammatory foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, can help reduce inflammation and improve overall health.

What are some other common treatments for endometriosis?

The treatment options for endometriosis depend on the severity of the symptoms, the extent of the disease, and the woman’s desire to have children in the future. Some common treatments for endometriosis include:

  • Lifestyle changes: Many women find relief from endometriosis symptoms by making dietary changes, reducing stress, and incorporating exercise into their routine.
  • Pain medication: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen and acetaminophen can help manage the pain associated with endometriosis.
  • Hormonal therapy: Hormonal treatments like birth control pills, hormone patches, and intrauterine devices (IUDs) can help control the growth and shedding of the endometrial tissue and reduce pain.
  • Surgery: In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the endometrial tissue, cysts, and scar tissue. This can be done through laparoscopy or laparotomy.
  • Assisted reproductive technology: If endometriosis is affecting fertility, in vitro fertilization (IVF) or other assisted reproductive technology may be recommended.
